History of Bridge at the Mombasa Sports Club

Members of the Club started playing Bridge in the early forties. However it later died out. In the late seventies Coast Bridge Association used the Club's premises to play their weekly sessions. In 1982 some of our members got together and started the Club's own Bridge Section.

At the moment we have about 40 regular playing members. The section has produced great players like A.D. Shah and C.D. Shah who have represented Kenya.in World Bridge contests. A.D. Shah and C.D. Shah won the East and Central America pairs championships in Zimbabwe in 1986. KP. Sifiah and PJ. Shah were the finalists in the team events in the same championship. A.D. Shah and C.D. Shah were 4th overall out of 100 pairs in the Asia, Africa and Middle East Bridge Championship played in Amman, Jordan in 1995. A few more are likely to be selected to play for Kenya in the near future. Then there are others who have won many major tournaments played in Mombasa and Nairobi.

Weekly sessions are being played every Wednesday evening with about 8 tables. Every last Wednesday of the month we playa monthly one session open pairs tournament when other Bridge players from Mombasa can participate. For nine continuous years the section has organised a three session open pairs tournament under the banner of "King Lion Housewares Trophy" , which was kindly sponsored by Messrs. Kaluworks Ltd. of Mombasa. In this tournament apart from our members other Bridge players from Mombasa and Nairobi participated. The section also organises one open pairs tournament every year.

Tribute must be paid to Mr. D.D. Doshi for coaching beginners when the Club started its own Bridge Section. Later on Mr. Pulin Gandhi started giving coaching to the novices which included many ladies. However due to lack of interest by some beginners this could not be continued. One of our active Bridge players Mr. Tushar Pujara has been appointed, by the Kenya Bridge Association, a member of the selection committee to decide on the selection of members from Mombasa to represent the Association at International Tournaments. He was selected as hon. playing captain for Kenya in Asia, Africa and Middle East Bridge Championship 1995 in Amman, Jordan.

Since its inception fifteen years ago the section has grown from strength and if provided with better playing facilities the section will definitely produce more players to represent the country at national level.
